Summer Camp – a time we all remember fondly. Playing with others a age, stay counselors who we wanted to be like when we grew up, days of fun and interacting with children of all ages. Midland area children with growth disabilities recently had such an knowledge during We Are a World Summer Camp, a collaborative bid between Bynum School, Midland Children’s Rehabilitation Center and MARC. The annual stay facilities a opposite thesis any year and provides a fun-filled and educational time for children who competence not differently have a opportunity.

The three-week stay offers opposite times for a several age groups and is highlighted by Family Fun Day, that has a carnival-type atmosphere and is open to all a children who attend camp, as good as their whole family. From a petting zoo to face portrayal to rebound houses and sleet cones, Family Fun Day is accurately that: fun.

During camp, staff counselors and volunteers work with a children on humanities and crafts, music, earthy activities and scholarship projects. Hands-on opportunities are supposing in each aspect. The stay is staffed by paid counselors and leaders and volunteers, including former campers who have aged out of a module and offer as mentors to a younger campers. Helper Bees — as a mentors are referred to — are now aged adequate to give behind to their village by aiding younger children. The coach module was started final year as a approach for teenagers with disabilities to rivet in proffer service. It is another step in their trail to apropos prolific members of a Permian Basin.

“The Bees are a extensive help, generally when we are operative on art or other projects,” pronounced MaryClaire Swallow, stay director. “They are additional hands to assist. Plus, they are closer to a campers’ age — and what child doesn’t demeanour adult to a teen assisting them? We usually have so many paid staff, so a volunteers, both village and Bees, are essential to a success of a camp.”

This year, stay was hold during a Spectrum of Solutions trickery on Illinois Avenue. Each week featured a H2O day, that was hold during a MCRC pool. Many children attending We Are The World stay competence not differently have a event to attend a stay since of physical, romantic or developmental delays. Most camps are not staffed or prepared for a additional support a child competence need. Additionally, a 3 organizations that work together for a stay get to see a children in a opposite atmosphere. Rather than a particularly educational situation, or a therapy environment, a children are interacting with their peers in a loose and fun setting. This provides their unchanging teachers and therapists with  new information, that in spin provides larger enrichment opportunities for a child.

About 65 children participated in camp. Fifteen village volunteers, 8  Helper Bees and 6 paid staff worked during a three-week camp, that is supposing during no cost to families. The module has been saved by a James A. Buddy Davidson Charitable Foundation for some-more than 10 years.
